What a senior software engineer delivers in the first 90 days

A concrete 90-day delivery map for companies hiring senior ownership—milestones, artifacts, and how to measure progress.

90 days should leave you with a system, not a status culture

When companies hire a software engineer, month three is where trust is earned. Here is the delivery map I use so stakeholders can measure without micromanaging.

Days 1–30: truth and a thin slice

  1. Written brief: users, constraints, definition of done.
  2. Architecture sketch for tenancy, auth, and deploy.
  3. First vertical slice in staging—ugly but real.
  4. Access: repo, cloud, observability.

Days 31–60: production path and operator needs

  • Production deploy with rollback.
  • Core workflow usable by a real user.
  • Thin admin or runbook so you are not trapped.
  • Tests or checks on the money path.

Days 61–90: harden for growth

  • Permissions and audit where risk lives.
  • One integration or reporting path that unblocks the business.
  • Performance pass on the screens people live in.
  • Handoff notes a second engineer can use.
If day 90 is still “almost ready for design review,” you hired activity.

Pair this with the first 30 days and in-house vs freelance cost.
