How large companies evaluate a freelance software engineer
What procurement, CTOs, and product leads actually check before engaging an independent senior engineer—and how to pass that bar.
Enterprise buyers do not hire vibes
Large companies and serious mid-market teams evaluate a freelance software engineer the same way they evaluate a vendor: risk, ownership, and proof. Portfolio polish matters less than whether you can answer security, delivery, and communication questions without improvising.
If you are a founder or VP comparing agencies to independents, use this checklist. If you are hiring me, this is the bar I expect to clear.
What decision-makers ask
- Who owns the outcome? One accountable engineer beats a rotating bench.
- Where does the code live? Your GitHub, your cloud, your keys—never a black box.
- How do you ship? Staging, review, deploy, rollback. Name the path.
- What happens when you leave? Docs, admin access, and a system a second engineer can enter.
- Security basics: secrets handling, least privilege, tenant boundaries, no production SSH theater.
Signals that survive diligence
- A written first slice: users, workflow, definition of done in 30–90 days.
- References to production systems (SaaS, CRM, internal platforms)—not only demos.
- Comfort talking to product, ops, and legal in plain language.
- Timezone and response norms stated up front for remote work.
If a candidate cannot describe rollback, they are not ready for business-critical software.
Agency vs senior independent for enterprise work
Agencies help when you need many roles in parallel. For a bounded product stream—multi-tenant SaaS, a custom CRM module, an AI feature inside an existing stack—one senior engineer is often faster and cheaper to govern. You get a single thread of accountability and fewer handoffs.
